Copper Trees

Copper Trees

Yes. Copper trees. When working in Nelson, New Zealand, I had the opportunity to do some refurbishment work on a one off luxury house. One of my projects was to cover the main supporting columns at each corner of the property in copper. These columns were made from tree trunks that were excavated from a nearby lake. Over a ten year period these had split through the centre and were letting water into the property. The chosen solution was to cover the tree trunks with thick copper foil to make the property watertight and provide an aesthetically pleasing finish. The copper foil was pressed into every crease and bump, edges folded to make watertight and stuck to the trunk with a mastic type adhesive. I manufactured copper flashings to join the foil into the window frames and the roof, providing a completely sealed structure. The entire roof, all down pipes and flashings are copper.
